The daily life of students and academics is woven into the Information and Communication Technology revolution. AI is the latest ICT revolution. The AI revolution must not threaten universities or prevent students from using AI. The ban on AI use will force students to use it in secret or underground. Universities must facilitate the responsible use of AI by encouraging values such as critical evaluation, developing alternative assessment methods, ensuring transparent AI use, and running AI awareness campaigns. Students must be made aware of AI biases, AI unreliability, and AI delirium.
Universities must have an academic integrity regime that is not centred on policing students. The pillars of academic integrity must be centred on academic authenticity, responsibility, justice, respect, and confidence. Academics must understand that AI does not degrade academic standards or integrity; the abuse of AI is the problem. AI abuse will only occur when there are no proper, fair AI use policies.
AI USE MUST BE BASED ON THE FOLLOWING:
- Students must be permitted to use AI for brainstorming and summarising (while disclosing their use).
- Redesigning assessment techniques to place the human role at the centre of assessments. Teaching students to compare AI outputs with scholarly sources.
THE BENEFITS OF AI ADOPTION BY UNIVERSITIES
- It enhances responsible AI use.
- Minimises stress for students and academics.
- It enhances online AI proficiency.
- It prepares students to use AI responsibly in their future workspaces.
- It removes the policing aspect of managing AI.
